Your questions, answered: scaling EPDs without the verification backlog

During our latest webinar, “How to Scale EPDs Without the 3-Month Verification Backlog,” attendees submitted a large number of excellent questions for our speakers: Nemanja Nedic (Program Manager, EPD Hub), Maria Chiara Franchi (LCA & EPD Global Project Manager, Signify), Dr. Yazan Badour (LCA & EPD Verification Specialist), and Josefina Pallas (Process Demo Lead). 

We have collected questions and answers from the session below, grouped by topic, so you can find what is most relevant to you. 

The E2E (end-to-end) process and pre-verified tools 

1. Do the three error-free EPDs required for E2E verification need to come from a single user, or can they be created by different users within the same company account? 

It is acceptable for them to come from different users. The total count of three error-free EPDs applies per customer or company, not per individual user. 

2. Are EPDs published through the E2E process considered as trustworthy as EPDs that are manually verified? 

Yes. The E2E process was built for customers that need to publish large volumes of EPDs, for whom traditional single verification would be extremely expensive and time-consuming. The E2E process limits the user’s freedom when creating an EPD, and because the tools are fully pre-verified by EPD Hub, this significantly reduces the amount of data that needs to be verified. Quality is not compromised; it is simply a different process that enables EPDs to be scaled. 

3. If an indicator is missing, can we make the necessary changes and re-upload for E2E instead of moving directly to manual verification? 

You will not be removed from the E2E process. Within the E2E tool, that specific declaration will be moved from auto-publishing to manual verification. This is part of our automation, which alerts us if any requirement is not being met. To make sure the EPD quality meets our expectations, we prefer that a human verifier reviews that specific declaration before it is published. 

4. What product portfolios is the E2E process best suited to? Do all products need to be reasonably similar, or come from a limited number of materials or production plants? 

You can find the list of pre-verified tools here: Pre-verified tools. For other product categories, it is possible to follow the process certification route, for which product grouping must be done beforehand. Only products with a similar material composition can be grouped, and only quantities are expected to be edited in the LCA model. 

5. For which PCRs can I use the E2E process? Which products can be calculated with a pre-verified tool? 

EPD Hub Core PCR version 1.2 (24 March 2025), or the newest 2026 version. 

6. Is there a pre-verified tool currently on the market for creating an EPD for centrifugal fans? 

This could potentially be modeled in the One Click LCA pre-verified tool for electrical and electronic products. It is also possible to pursue your own process certification to obtain a customized tool, though it is best to check the framework for this with software providers. 

Verification process and timelines 

7. What is the current time frame for EPD verification? 

It depends on how well the EPD is prepared, but the usual time frame is one to three weeks for good-quality EPD submissions. 

8. What are the main things to consider for a good-quality EPD submission? 

There are some common errors that should be avoided, such as issues with allocation, electricity modeling, incorrect assumptions (or assumptions inconsistent with the modeling), and end-of-life modeling, particularly end-of-life allocation for module D. Our previous webinar explored these themes in more detail if you would like to consult it. 

9. How often do verification questions come through while an EPD is being submitted? Do they need full focus, or are they usually quick and simple? 

The verification questions vary depending on the quality of the EPD draft and the LCA model. They require transparency and a degree of focus. 

10. When clarifications are requested due to the verifier misunderstanding something or making a mistake, is it possible to fast-track the next verification round, given that it is not the publisher’s fault? 

The verification of answers between rounds is usually quite fast, unless the verifier is absent or unavailable for some reason. 

11. Is there any way to communicate with the verifier other than the comment box on EPD Hub? A better communication channel could make the process faster. 

Yes, we can establish email communication or a call if needed. The verifier’s email is available in the Excel file that you can download from the verification screen. 

12. How many times can an EPD be corrected and resubmitted for verification within the price of one EPD? 

The process can continue until the EPD is correct and verified. However, additional rounds can take more time and may incur additional costs. 

13. What does “additional rounds can take more time and more cost” mean? How do I know how many rounds are included at no extra cost? 

Currently, no additional costs apply. However, given that some processes involve an excessive number of rounds due to difficulties in understanding verifier requests, it is likely that the number of rounds included in the initial submission, and the cost of extra rounds, will be defined soon. 

14. If a manufacturer is going through the verification process, can you provide a letter confirming that they are doing so? 

Yes, we can. 

Parent and sister EPDs, and grouped submissions 

15. Does the parent EPD need to be approved before the sister EPDs can be verified? Can all sister EPDs related to the same parent EPD be submitted as a group, or should they be submitted one at a time? 

Parent and sister EPDs can in fact be verified simultaneously. During publishing, however, the parent EPD needs to be published first, as its number will be included in the sister EPDs. If the parent EPD is already published, several sister EPDs can be submitted at the same time. 

16. If I have several very similar products, for example with 75% material overlap by mass, do they need to be submitted on the same day for the verification to run in a similar time frame, or is several days or a week apart acceptable? 

Flag this directly with EPD Hub’s team when submitting the first one, and ask them to hold or flag the group for the verifier, rather than relying on the system to infer it. 

PCRs and standards 

17. Where do I find your accepted PCRs in your program? I am looking for an overview of the products I can get an EPD for. 

Only our main PCR, which is applicable to most products, is available on the site. If product-specific EN c-PCRs apply, they shall be used. You may find a list of them in our PCR. 

18. Could you confirm which PCR version is currently being used on EPD Hub? 

Versions 1.2 and 1.2.1. 

19. How often do you expect the PCR to change in the next few years? 

It depends on our in-depth analysis of what is needed to improve the quality of EPDs and the LCA model. 

Pricing and platform 

20. What would the cost be of creating EPDs and LCAs for the first three years, including training hours? 

This is not something we can answer in full, but we can provide EPD prices, which you can find here: EPD Hub pricing. For training, it is best to contact the LCA software companies directly. 

21. How much does a single EPD publication cost on EPD Hub, and how does the price change with more submissions?

22. Will you continue using credits, or is another approach being considered?

23. Would it be possible to calculate Scopes 1, 2, and 3 through the same application? 

This is linked to the LCA software that has been used. 

24. Our customers have given feedback that it is now more difficult to directly access and share links to specific product EPDs compared to before, when we could simply send a direct link to each product’s EPD. Has something changed? 

Nothing has changed in the way we share EPDs. You can simply copy and paste the URL of your EPD in the library. This is a direct and unique link to your published EPD. 

25. Are there any plans to improve or redesign the product page layout on EPD Hub? If so, could you share any information about upcoming changes?

The Signify case study 

26. Why are costs falling by up to 80%, and why is the duration being reduced from months to just a few weeks? 

Previously, Signify had to rely on external consultants, and the cost was very high because they were doing all the work from scratch. This was also why it took months: they had to understand the data, validate it, and then go through several rounds of questions and clarifications. Only after that could they create the EPD, verify it, and so on. Now the knowledge has been brought in-house. Signify has a team that is competent to create an EPD, knows its own data and how to use it, and can quickly put an EPD together. 

27. Was the template for EPD generation at Signify developed internally? 

Yes, it is a customized template rather than the standard EPD Hub template, but it contains all the mandatory elements. 

28. How big is the team working on EPD creation at Signify? 

It involves a whole chain of people, including suppliers, but the LCA modeling itself is handled by a team of three. 

29. How do you use the producer’s ERP data? Producers normally have ready BOMs with material numbers that could be copied into the EPD calculation system. 

This depends on which LCA software or EPD tool you are using, but many LCA software platforms now have direct integration with ERP systems, and you can publish your EPDs directly via API. Some examples are explained in our GPI.
