Common EPD verification issues and how to avoid them

Even well-prepared EPDs often face delays due to recurring technical issues. Most verification problems are preventable.

1. Incomplete Data Documentation

Missing factory-level data, allocation methods, or supporting calculations frequently cause rejections.

Fix: Provide full transparency in data collection and allocation procedures.

2. Misuse of Secondary Data

Datasets not aligned with EN 15804+A2 or missing required indicators can invalidate results.

Fix: Ensure full standard compliance and representativeness.

3. Electricity Modeling Errors

Common mistakes include using location-based averages instead of market-based data or missing renewable energy documentation.

Fix: Use market-based electricity data and provide guarantees of origin.

4. End-of-Life Inconsistencies

Recycling assumptions often do not match declared benefits across modules.

Fix: Ensure consistent lifecycle modeling across all modules.

5. Biogenic Carbon Confusion

Biogenic carbon content is often confused with GWP biogenic impact.

Fix: Clearly distinguish material content from lifecycle impact indicators.

Most verification issues are preventable through structured data management and methodological consistency.
