Internal verification

Internal verification is designed for manufacturers with dedicated teams focused on creating Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs). To become an internal verifier, candidates must pass an exam administered by EPD Hub. This exam is reviewed by the verification committee, and once approved for a specific product category, the verifier can begin conducting verifications. The status of an approved verifier does not expire, but verifiers must stay updated with any changes in EPD Hub's General Program Instructions (GPI) and Product Category Rules (PCR).

Key point: Verifiers must remain completely independent from the EPD creation process to ensure impartiality.

Competence requirements for persons doing internal verifications:

  • Suitable education or training to allow for effective work in the field of LCA and EPD.

  • Knowledge of the applicable standards for the EPDs, as well as ISO 14025.

  • Understanding the relevant sector, product/service and their environmental impacts.

  • Understanding the manufacturing process of the relevant product.

  • Training and knowledge of LCA and EPD verifications, demonstrated by an exam.

  • Knowledge of EPD Hub GPI, PCR, and other relevant instructions.

Impartiality requirements for persons doing internal verifications:

  • Not to have an economic interest in a particular outcome, positive or negative, regarding the result of the verification.

  • Be free from any conflict of interest that would bias the impartiality of verification.

  • Committed to uphold EPD Hub terms and conditions.
